One easy solution is to keep a towel or washable puppy pad by the door. Use this as a doggie door mat, or just wipe your pet paws before they come inside. Many pet owners find other uses for their washable puppy pads in addition to training. Some pet owners have even trained their pets to wipe their paws before entering.

In addition to keeping your pet's laws clean and dry, it's important to keep the rest of your pet clean from mud splatters and spring skunk encounters. If your pet simply has rolled in the mud a bit too much, check out our selection of dog shampoo and conditioner. This dog shampoo is specially made for dogs and is safe to use on their skin and will help keep their coat looking healthy. You can give your pet a bath in the tub or outside with the hose. Then dry him off with that washable puppy pad, just one more use for the pads.

If your pet encounters a skunk, you'll need to give he or she a tomato juice bath. Most pet owners know this and keep a few bottles on hand in case of this emergency. After the tomato juice bath, you may want to give your dog a bath using regular dog shampoo to eliminate the tomato smell, and help condition their dried out skin.

With these tips, hopefully those April Showers will only bring May Flowers, and not muddy pets!

Celebrate Earth Day With Eco-Friendly Washable Puppy Pads

MEDNET Direct is excited to announce that our Eco-Friendly Washable Puppy Pads have been selected by Los Angles based Distinctive Assets for the Earth Day In Hollywood 2010 Gift Bag. This spring, cure your cabin fever, along with your dog's and get outside for a walk or a game of catch.

Now is the perfect time to stock up on dog toys for the warm spring and summer months, when you and your pet will be soaking up every minute of nice weather! Your dog will love it more than you could ever imagine if he/she came home to a brand new tennis ball, or other fun dog toy to play with in the newly uncovered grass!

Spring is also the perfect time to replace worn out dog collars, leashes and tie outs that you will need this spring and summer. Your dog will always enjoy going on a neighborhood walk to show off their new collar and leash. Using a dog tie out while you perform outdoor work will allow your dog to enjoy the fresh air without running away.

In addition to the fun outdoor spring and summer activities you and your pet will enjoy, spring and summer seasons also cause pets to shed more than usual. Make sure you have an appropriate dog brush to help keep your furniture hair free and dog grooming supplies, such as flea and tick shampoo to keep your pet free of pesky outdoor mites.

Happy Spring to you and your pet!

About the Author: Kerry Perissi is the Founder & Vice President of MEDNET Direct, a leading provider of medical supplies as well as quality puppy pads. Many people wait for Spring to adopt a pet because it offers the perfect weather for outdoor training, especially for dogs

While many people will adopt a new puppy during the spring, remember that spring is the perfect time to adopt any pet especially a Guinea Pig because March is Adopt a Guinea Pig Month!

The ASPCA declared March 2002 the first Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month to raise awareness about guinea pigs in the shelter system and to celebrate guinea pigs as pets. Did you know that there are 3.3 million guinea pigs in American homes, according to the 2003-2004 National Pet Survey prepared by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, Inc? Yes, there are; because Guinea Pigs are such great pets. Furthermore, there are many Guinea Pigs in shelters that are in need of adoption. Most people do not know that these animals are available at shelters, so rescue one from a shelter if you plan to adopt a Guinea Pig!

Guinea Pigs are great pets for homes without backyards for dogs to run free. They are also great for families with pet allergies, because Guinea Pigs live in cages, which can be secluded from allergy stricken household members. Guinea Pigs are also quiet, affectionate and do not demand constant attention like other pets.

This spring when you are considering adopting a pet, seriously consider making an adorable Guinea Pig to your family.

About the Author: Kerry Perissi is the Founder & Vice President of MEDNET Direct, a leading provider of medical supplies as well as quality puppy pads. These lightweight wheelchairs serve a number of purposes and are great for individuals who need occasional mobility assistance.

Many elderly people can move about their homes just fine without a wheelchair, but cannot walk long distances. A trip to the mall or a doctor appointment may cause difficulty, but can be made much easier by using a transport wheelchair.

Transport wheelchairs are much lighter than regular wheelchairs, and are much easier for caregivers to lift in and out of vehicles. They are also much lighter to push than standard wheelchairs. Using these wheelchairs can give a patient a greater sense of independence by allowing them to walk when they can and only using this chair for certain situations. Many patients feel like less of a burden when their caregiver has an easy time maneuvering the chair in and out of a car, office or home, making life a bit easier for caregivers as well.

Some patients are strong enough to maneuver the transport wheelchair by themselves, and may keep it in their car in case they feel they need it when they arrive at a particular location.

Using transport wheelchairs for occasional mobility needs creates a safe environment for patients and a less stressful situation for caregivers, allowing patients to remain as independent as possible.

About the Author: Kerry Perissi is the Founder & Vice President of MEDNET Direct, a leading provider of medical supplies as well as quality puppy pads. But some pet owners don't know that puppy pads are also a good item to have around the house to help accommodate occasional pet needs, especially in the winter.

Many dogs don't like the cold weather, especially small dogs. Smaller pets sometimes have to be dressed in warm pet clothing before going outside, however their paws can still get cold. Large amounts of snow can also inhibit smaller pets from going outside because the snow piles are taller than they are. Puppy pads are great for these situations. Pets can simply use the puppy pad and stay in the comfort and warmth of their own home, and not feel guilty about making a mess in the house.

Puppy pads can also serve a disposable door mat for your pet. Pet's paws can easily drag salt, melted snow, and even mud in the house as the snow comes and goes. Keeping a pad near the door will quickly absorb any dirt or moisture dragged in my your dog and keep it from getting on your carpets and floors.

Similarly, puppy pads, both washable and disposable can be used as pet towels for those pets who do like to roll in the snow or mud during the winter. You can simply dry off your pet with a washable or disposable puppy pad before he or she enters your home, preventing any dirt and moisture from getting in your house, while keeping your pet clean and dry. Using puppy pads for this task will keep your good towels safe from stains.

Keep your pets comfortable this winter by keeping a supply of puppy pads on hand.

About the Author: Kerry Perissi is the Founder & Vice President of MEDNET Direct, a leading provider of medical supplies as well as quality puppy pads. As caregivers, we want to ensure the people we are caring for have the most normal experiences possible, and we want to ensure their safety while doing so. If someone in your family needs physical assistance, consider investing in the proper type of durable medical equipment for use in their home.

Using these types of assistive devices, such as bath benches and wheelchairs will make the handicapped person feel a greater sense of independence when they can perform normal activities more easily, and it will help reduce the stress of their caregivers by requiring less assistance from them.

While shopping at the mall, wheelchairs or walkers can be very helpful. If you are a caregiver, you can actually take some time and enjoy shopping with the person you are caring for, instead of worrying if they are ok or asking them if they need to rest constantly, and they too can feel like they are contributing.

Durable medical equipment is a smart investment for anyone who is a caregiver or anyone who requires assistance, and can help both parties enjoy greater independence every day of the year, not just around the stressful holiday times.

About the Author: Kerry Perissi is the Founder & Vice President of MEDNET Direct, a leading provider of medical supplies as well as quality puppy pads. In honor of this giving season, we've put together a list of last minute gift ideas in case you are looking for something for that special pet or pet lover.

Many times in addition to your own pet, people bring pet gifts to their holiday host if they have a pet. Great things for pets of your holiday host include pet toys and treats, of course. Pets often get over excited when guests are in the home, and providing the pet with a new bone or toy will help occupy the pet while you enjoy your dinner. The owner will also appreciate the gesture. Treats are often great inexpensive gifts for pets, and a gift they are sure to like. Just clear it with the owner before you let Fido eat the treat, in case the pet is on a special diet or has allergies.

If you are in search of a last minute gift for the pet owner in your life, there are many gifts pet lovers are sure to appreciate. Dog or Cat calenders featuring cute pet photos always make a great gift that everyone can use, and it lasts all year long. Gift cards to pet stores, to help them purchase needed pet supplies are always appreciated as well. Many holiday stores offer personalization on pet Christmas ornaments. Personalized ornaments make great gifts for pet owners who have recently lost a pet, and they make nice keepsakes for current pets. You can also give cute pet photo frames with photo of their pet inside. Another idea is to make a donation to a local animal shelter in their name. Pet owners love helping other pets, and you'll be helping other pets too!

Happy Holidays!

About the Author: Kerry Perissi is the Founder & Vice President of MEDNET Direct, a leading provider of medical supplies as well as quality puppy pads. We found these wonderful tips, as recommended by the CDC to help everyone have a healthy holiday season.

Wash Hands Often- This is a longtime mantra of moms, health care industries and the CDC. It’s a good mantra. Wash you hands, and do it often. Hand washing is one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs.

Travel Safely- Even if you are just headed off to the mall, or a holiday party, make sure you buckle your seatbelt, keep kids in the appropriate child safety seat, and don’t drink and drive. These few everyday safety precautions can often be forgotten during the hustle and bustle of the holidays. If air travel or long distance traveling are on your holiday itinerary, review health precautions made by your destination’s health professionals, such as appropriate vaccines and precautions to take.

Take Indoor & Outdoor Safety Precautions- Since most residential fires occur during the winter months, keep candles and open flames away from flammable materials and never leave flames unattended. Install a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector in your home if you don’t already have one. Test them once a month, and replace batteries twice a year. When hanging holiday decorations and lights outdoors, use safety precautions such as using a ladder and a safety harness when hanging high lights. On the indoors, use a step stool to hand decorations instead of unstable furniture. Always turn off the electricity before you mess with it, and never overload circuits.

We wish you and your family a happy, healthy holiday season.

About the Author: Kerry Perissi is the Founder & Vice President of MEDNET Direct, a leading provider of medical supplies as well as quality puppy pads. It was the first reported case in a feline. Since many pet owners consider and treat their pets like children, this should reinforce in our minds that it's important not to neglect the health of our pets this flu and holiday season.

With the hustle and bustle all of us are caught up in during the holidays, sometimes our pets don't receive as much attention as they are accustomed to. During this time period, ensure you make an effort to give your pet some extra attention. Make efforts to ensure their feeding habits are not interrupted and that they are not locked up in the house for more than 8 hours without a bathroom break. Simply stop at home to let out the dog and give he/she some attention before you dash out to those holiday sales.

Also if your pet is exhibiting any abnormal behavior, take him/her to the vet as soon as possible. If your pet is ill, it's best to catch it early to help them get better quickly. Remember, your pet cannot tell you that he/she is not feeling well.

If someone in your household is ill, even with a cold, make sure they stay away from your pet as much as possible. We know that diseases can be transmitted from the human to the animal, so try and limit your contact with your pet if you are sick and take precautions to prevent the spread of germs as you would between any member of your household.

By following these simple tips, you and your pet will enjoy a happier, healthier holiday and flu season.

About the Author: Kerry Perissi is the Founder & Vice President of MEDNET Direct, a leading provider of medical supplies as well as quality puppy pads. Here are a couple tips to make you and your pup an eco-friendly duo.

Adopt your puppy. Puppy mills are not only cruel, but they are wasteful eco-dumps. Do not support the puppy mill industry and adopt your puppy from a shelter.

Fix your pup. The Humane Society estimates that there are more than 70,000 puppies and kittens born daily in the USA. This rampant overpopulation not only strains resources, but it also leads to neglected animals. Spay or neuter your pet to help curb the overpopulation that leads to the need for shelters.

Use eco-friendly products. You can find an eco-friendly version of all things doggie these days. There are durable hemp toys, washable puppy pads for house breaking, and chemical-free cleaning products for bath time. Take a moment to read labels and the green products will be easy to spot.

Compost your puppy’s waste. Don’t just toss Fido’s poo into the garbage. Sadly, landfills are incredibly inefficient environments for breaking down materials. Instead, dig a compost area in your yard, away from any vegetables or plants you plan to eat. This will help keep your garden fertilized and also make waste disposal fast and easy.

Buy quality food. Buy your pup food that comes from quality, organic ingredients. Most inexpensive dog foods come from diseased or dying cattle and use grains grown with harsh chemicals. If you are feeling really eco-friendly and motivated, you can even use your leftovers to make your buddy’s diner. Stick to vegetables, meats, fruit and grains, because leftover tiramisu is not so good for puppies. Other foods to avoid include raw meat, grapes or raisins, onions, macadamia nuts, walnuts, mustard seed, any form of garlic, mushrooms, moldy food, yeast dough, chocolate or candy, and artificial sweeteners or fats. Here are some recommended precautions.

Increase Fido’s caloric intake. It is wise to increase your pup’s protein intake during the winter months. This helps your dog maintain a thick, warm coat.

Don’t shave your dog’s coat. It might sound like common sense, but it is worth stating. Do not shave your buddy down to the skin. Fido needs a winter coat too.

Don’t let your dog air dry. Common sense again, but just for the record, if you wash your dog, dry him or her completely before you go outside. Also, when you get home from your walk in snowy or icy conditions, be sure to completely dry your pup’s feet and legs. This is not only for their comfort but also to prevent them from ingesting excess salt and harmful anti-freeze type chemicals. Left alone, wet feet can also chap, crack and bleed.

Make sure their bed is warm and insulated. Check their sleeping area for drafts. Give them a warm blanket and pillow to make sure their nights are comfy and cozy. You can also leave them a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel (to prevent burning). Your dog will love it.

Get Fido some duds. Sweaters and coats are a good addition in very cold weather. It’s not a Paris Hilton thing; it will truly improve your pup’s quality of life. If you own a short-haired breed think about getting a turtle neck that extends the length of their body, all the way to the tail. They will appreciate it (and look stylin'!)

Don’t leave your best friend outside for prolonged periods. It’s cold out there and they will suffer. It also increases their chances of getting sick. Keep your dog inside as much as possible, and when they do go outside, go with them. If you’re too cold, changes are so are they.

Keep your buddy on the leash. When the ground is frozen, it becomes easy for a dog to lose their scent, and thus easier for a dog to get lost. Because of this, more dogs go missing in the winter months so make sure they always have their tags on. This is a dangerous time of year for your pup to go on a walk-about. This is especially true if you live near a pond or lake.

Don’t leave your dog alone in the car. Just like the summer months, your car becomes a hostile environment in extreme weather. Dogs can freeze to death in a closed, frigid environment.

Be careful with your puppy or elderly dog. Puppies cannot tolerate cold the way a full-grown dog can. Same goes for very elderly or sickly dogs. If it is quite cold out, you may need to use a puppy pads for house training and wait till spring to start moving them outside. Older dogs can go outside to relieve themselves if necessary but during extreme cold a puppy training pads is a great backup plan. Keep in mind that the cold can aggravate arthritis, so keeping an elderly dog inside can significantly improve their comfort.

Get a winter veterinary checkup. It’s a great time to make an appointment with your vet and check and see how your buddy’s health is. This will help ensure everything is tip-top or make you aware of any conditions that might be intensified by the cold.

Seek medical attention if your dog gets ill. Frostbite and hypothermia are the most common serious conditions your pup might contract in extremely cold temperatures. If you get the slightest suspicion that your dog is experiencing symptoms of either of these ailments, see a veterinary hospital immediately. Frostbite occurs when a part of the dog (usually paws, ears, or tail) get so cold that the tissue literally forms internal ice crystals. This can be very painful and cause permanent damage. It is also hard to spot right away so the best course of action is avoiding frost-bite educing situation. Signs of hypothermia are more apparent. Look for shivering, depression, lethargy, and weakness. The dog’s muscles will eventually stiffen and their heart rate will drop. They may even become catatonic. Obviously, this is a scary and dangerous ailment; seek out hospitalization right away.

The winter months can be a lot of fun for you and your pet if you take the proper precautions. Have fun and be safe!

About the Author: Kerry Perissi is the Founder & Vice President of MEDNET Direct, a leading provider of disposable medical supplies as well as quality puppy pads. They make cleaning up after your puppy fast, easy and convenient. But few pet owners are aware that puppy training pads have a myriad of other uses, making them one of the most versatile pet care products you can find. Here are a few reasons why puppy pads should be a staple in any pet owner's home.

Vet Visits. A trip to the vet can be a very unnerving experience for some pets. Your dog or puppy may become anxious or excited, which of course can lead to accidents. Puppy pads provide a little backup when your pet’s nerves get the best of them. Since they are both portable and disposable, you won’t have to worry about any mishaps at or on the way to the vet’s office.

Car Trips. Your buddy may love a good car ride, but peeing accidents in the car can become a messy, smelly and expensive issue. Use puppy pads as a protective layer between your puppy and the car seat and floor. The pad will even help pick up hair and mud, while mitigating any accidents along the way. Or, if you travel with a kennel, puppy pads can be used as a liner. You can rest assured that when you arrive at your destination, clean up will be quick and easy.

Grooming. Whether grooming at home or making a trip to the groomer, puppy pads not only soak up accidents, but they catch hair trimmings and absorb water, soap and shampoo. If you do your own home grooming, the puppy pad makes cleaning up a breeze.

Sick, Convalescing or Elderly Pets. Animals recovering from surgery and elderly incontinent pets can also take comfort in puppy pads. Use it on the floor and furniture to prevent unavoidable accidents.

Meal Areas. If your dog is particularly messy or slobbery when he eats (some breeds just are), a puppy pad can be placed in the meal time area to help you keep things tidy.

Don’t Forget the Cats and Kittens. Puppy pads are equally effective for kittens, as well as sick or elderly cats. Not only will the pads absorb accidents, but they can also help keep things clean around the litter box (kittens love to toss that litter) and around the food and water areas.

About the Author: Kerry Perissi is the Founder & Vice President of MEDNET Direct, a leading provider of disposable medical supplies as well as quality puppy pads. These affects are amplified if the individual does not obtain the treatment and support she needs. Women who suffer urinary incontinence often report anxiety, shame, a fear of intimacy, a sense of insecurity and loss of control, and low self esteem. Those with adult incontinence frequently withdraw from social situations and can become isolated and depressed. This suffering, however, is unnecessary and avoidable. There are a number of products and treatments available on the market to help with this condition. It’s just a matter of getting the right information, tools, and support.

There are different forms of adult female incontinence which result from a wide array of causes. From aging to neurological injury, to pregnancy and childbirth, incontinence is frequently the result of nerve or structural damage. Stress Incontinence refers to leakage that may occur when a woman does something sudden, such as coughs, laughs, or sneezes. Overflow Incontinence occurs when your bladder does not empty properly due to weak bladder muscles, while Urge Incontinence manifests as a sudden urgency to urinate due to abnormal nerve signals or bladder spasms. Overactive Bladder is also the result of improper nerve signals. Functional Incontinence refers to the inability to physically make it to a toilet and typically applies to the elderly.

Fortunately, today's incontinence sufferers have more options than ever. Helpful information, support and products are available online. Pads and undergarments are less bulky and intrusive than ever. Medical companies offer wholesale pricing and discrete delivery of a wide variety of female incontinence products. There are also a number of effective treatments that you can review with your physician. Bladder retraining and Kegel Exercises are popular. Many doctors recommend “timed avoidance” where the patient adheres to a schedule where you go to the restroom at designated times of the day without fail. Doctors may also prescribe medicines for Overactive Bladder which can help to block nerve signals. In more extreme cases, advanced treatments are available as well, including injections, vaginal devices, biofeedback, surgery, and even neurological treatments.

Please note that this article is for informational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose or treat any medical condition, or be taken as medical advice. Your dental office must be profitable in order to survive – but turning a profit is harder than ever. For this reason, keeping abreast of dental trends is critical to your office’s viability.

Opportunity lies in new revenue streams. Even your most loyal clients may be delaying dental care as they tighten their budget. You can expand your offerings with a conscious focus on the market segment who can afford treatment. You cannot reasonably ask your patients to come in for check-ups every two months (wouldn’t that be nice), but you can appeal to their desire for self improvement. Cosmetic dentistry offers everything from whitening to veneers and even smoking cessation programs. These services have a high profit margin and help to expand your market reach. Incidentally, cosmetic procedures generate more buzz than general dental care, thus creating a free yet invaluable residual marketing campaign.

Reduce Your Dental Office’s Costs. There is no better time to reexamine your expenses because the internet makes it so easy. What are you paying for supplies? Lever technology and get your medical supplies wholesale online. Finding the right disposable product provider cuts out the retail middle man and can make all the difference to your profitability.

Appeal to Potential Patients Online. You aren’t the only one benefiting from the Internet. Consumers use the Internet to research dental experiences, service costs, and demystify procedures. Don’t bury your head in the sand. If you don’t have a website (what?!), get one. If you do, make sure your site is a user-friendly tool for information. Include a blog that covers dental news. Become an authority on the topic (you are – why not let people know it.) Heck, get a Facebook account if you want. Bottom line: make sure your patients and prospects can find your business online.

Alleviating dentist anxiety. Remember Little Shop of Horrors? The human villain was a dentist. Fair? Not really. Accurate public sentiment? Probably. For a culture that places a high value on healthy teeth, we are really afraid of the dentist. Countering this fear can significantly increase client loyalty. So, make your office more spa-like with calming décor, music, and videos. Things should feel clean, not institutional. Offer sedation when appropriate. And don’t underestimate the value of a congenial staff. While we’re at it, you should probably make sure your bed-side manner is strong as well. Every touch point needs to reassure your patient that this is going to be a good experience.

While the present market offers real challenges, with the right information, you can really make your dental practice a stronger, more profitable business.
About the Author: Kerry Perissi is the Founder & Vice President of MEDNET Direct, a leading supplier of disposable medical supplies for the medical and veterinary industries, including top quality puppy pads designed as a training aid for puppy housebreaking. Since heat is not an appropriate treatment option in all situations, consulting with a doctor is recommended prior to applying heat to any injury or painful area. Both disposable and reusable hot packs are available and come in various sizes, making them suitable for a wide range of uses. Some uses for instant hot packs are:

Relief from muscle aches, pains and stiffness. Heat helps to relax the muscles and can be a remedy for muscle pain or stiffness when inflammation is not present. Consulting with a doctor about chronic pain is important to ensure that heat application is suitable for your situation.

Alleviating joint pain. Applying heat for a limited amount of time can help alleviate joint pain associated with chronic conditions such as arthritis for some people.

Adding heat to the body in cases of mild hypothermia. Heat packs can be used to help gradually warm a person suffering from mild hypothermia. However, anyone in such situation should not be warmed too quickly, and attempting to warm a person may not be recommended in cases of severe hypothermia.

Relaxing the muscles prior to an athletic activity. Applying heat is a common technique used by those with arthritis to prepare for a doctor approved exercise regimen. Since heat helps relax the muscles, it can help prepare the muscles for physical activity and reduce exercise induced pain.

Keeping warm in cold environments. Even without the need to treat injuries, many enjoy the luxury of instant heat packs for warmth in cold environments such as outdoor sporting events, concerts and when working outdoors during the winter. Instant heat packs make excellent hand and body warmers and can make cold temperatures more comfortable.

Always consult with a doctor prior to applying heat to an injury or the site of pain if you are unsure whether heat therapy is the appropriate course of action. People with certain conditions are advised not to apply heat to an injury.

About MEDNET Direct: MEDNET Direct is a leading supplier of disposable supplies for medical, dental, spa and veterinarian offices. But if you live in an apartment or even a condo or townhouse without a fenced in yard, it can be even more difficult to potty train your new pup.

Puppy Pads not only help train pets who live in homes with yards to run and play in, but they are also ideal for those big city apartment pets.

When you live in the big city, things are hectic, and sometimes the weather does not always permit taking Fido for a walk or running outside on a leash. Puppy Pads can be placed in any area of an apartment and protect hardwood floors and carpeting from being stained by messy accidents. Simply place the Puppy Pad on the floor, and your pet will be naturally inclined to use it. When your pet is finished, simply fold up the puppy pad and toss it away. Using Puppy Pads will help make your pet more comfortable on days where being outside just isn’t an option, or on days where you are gone for extended periods of time.

Make life in the big city a bit easier for you and your best friend, and use Puppy Pads!

About MEDNET Direct: MEDNET Direct is a leading provider of disposable medical supplies as well as quality puppy pads. If soap and water is not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizers. These can used anytime after you touch potentially contaminated surfaces.

Try to avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes, since germs can easily enter the body though these passages. When you sneeze or cough, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue and immediately discard it. If you do not have a tissue, try sneezing or coughing into your arm, not your hand.

If possible try to avoid contact with sick people. If someone in your household is ill, make sure you sanitize dishes and other common items to prevent the bacteria from spreading to others.

Finally, remember to get your flu shots. Check with your doctor to see what flu vaccines are right for you and find out where they are available.

Puppy Housebreaking Resources: Are you Punishing too Much?

We humans are pretty good at detecting when a certain behavior results in negative consequences, and understand we can avoid those consequences by changing the behavior. Puppies are somewhat capable of the same, but they live and think in the present moment. They do not associate a negative consequence with an action unless the consequence occurs while they are performing the action. When you are housebreaking a puppy, punishing the puppy for accidents in the house is a good example. If you punish your puppy after an accident has occurred, the pup will most likely not associate the act with the punishment you inflicted. If you show him a puddle on the floor and scold him, he is probably just going to be confused and think that’s a bad puddle. So how do you communicate what you expect from your puppy during the critical housebreaking stage? For the most part, it is best to communicate through positive reinforcement rather than imposing too much punishment.

The problem is, we often punish out of emotion rather than the need for discipline in times of puppy housebreaking angst. We are frustrated that the accident happened, because we are putting so much energy into teaching the puppy otherwise, on top of the fact that now we have to clean up the mess. It also doesn't help that the puppy seems perfectly obliviously happy. The most immediate instinct is often to scold the puppy, who is, after all, the source of the frustration. But, what alleviates our anger is not necessarily the same as what teaches the puppy to do better next time.

Puppies learn best through positive reinforcement for desirable behavior. Praising your puppy when he eliminates in the correct place is more effective for training than punishing him for an accident. A firm "no" may be effective in teaching the puppy what not to do, but only if you catch him and say the word during the act. It is important to look for signs that the puppy needs to go, and take him immediately outdoors or to his puppy pad. As soon as he demonstrates the desirable behavior, praise him heavily. Do this every single time he goes in the acceptable place, and he will soon be delighted to go there and please his owner. Pleasing the leader of his pack, after all, is what the puppy is naturally wired to do.

If you have found yourself taking out anger on your puppy during housebreaking, you are not alone. Housebreaking can be quite frustrating, but developing habits that help your puppy understand what to do will be far more beneficial than punishing him after he has had an accident indoors. Housebreaking your puppy without excessive punishment will take plenty of time and patience, but will all pay off in the end!

About the Author: Kerry Perissi is the Founder & Vice President of MEDNET Direct, a leading provider of disposable medical supplies as well as quality puppy pads. N95 refers to a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) rating that is assigned to masks that meet a specified minimum standard for particle transmission. The N95 respirator mask is designed to filter up to 95% of airborne particles 0.3 microns or larger that may otherwise directly enter the nose and mouth of the wearer. These masks may also be worn by people who have a contagious illness to prevent particles from leaving the nose and mouth of the wearer and putting others at risk. While such masks do not protect against particle transmission with 100% accuracy, they can be effective in preventing the spread of infection.

N95 masks can be purchased with our without a valve to facilitate easier breathing. Optimal protection is achieved when the respirator mask fits snugly to the face, covering the nose and mouth without leaving open spaces along the edge. Respirator masks should be fitted correctly to the wearer and not be obstructed by facial hair or jewelry. A poorly fitted respirator mask has greater potential to allow air particles to enter through gaps along the edges of the mask, providing lower levels of protection against the inhalation or spread of particles than a well fitted one.

Respirator masks are widely used for occupational safety, and are particularly common in industrial and health care facilities. Masks used in the workplace must be NIOSH-approved, meaning they meet minimum standards put forth by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

The intended purpose should be kept in mind when purchasing respirator masks. Different types are designed for specific purposes and offer varying levels of protection. Another consideration is whether the mask contains latex, an allergen for some people. Latex free N95 respirator masks are available, and will be marked as such. Some people experience allergic reactions that can be mild to severe when exposed to latex. These reactions usually occur when an allergic person comes in contact with latex, but can also be the result of inhaling powder particles that are released when a powdered latex glove is removed, for instance. Though allergies to latex are relatively uncommon, people who are allergic should take precautions to protect themselves from exposure to latex.

Some symptoms of latex allergies that may occur within approximately 48 hours of contact are:

Itching, swelling and redness in the area where contact with latex has occurred

Blisters in the affected area

Stuffy nose and/or sneezing

Coughing and/or wheezing

Itchy eyes

Breathing difficulties

In severe cases, anaphylactic response

Those who have an allergy to latex do not all experience the same reaction or severity of symptoms, and anyone who suspects an allergy to latex should consult with a doctor. If a reaction includes breathing difficulty or other severe symptoms, emergency medical attention should be sought immediately.

Avoiding contact with latex is the best way to prevent the reactions associated with latex allergies. Fortunately, alternatives to common latex products are available. Disposable nitrile gloves are often used as a substitute for latex gloves when a medical professional or patient has a known latex allergy. Anyone with the allergy should inform nurses, doctors and dentists so that latex products can be avoided. For consumer products, checking the latex content of products prior to use is another precaution that can be taken to prevent exposure to the allergen.

About MEDNET Direct: MEDNET Direct is a leading provider of medical supplies wholesale for the medical, veterinary and dental industries.
